2023 Civic Funding Campaign
On May X, 2023, Representative Speakman took a bold and honorable step to ensure equitable access to civic education for all Rhode Islanders with the introduction of [bill #] requesting an allocation of $ 1 million to fund these efforts.
In 2021, the Rhode Island Civic Literacy Act was passed into law, requiring that all RI students achieve civics proficiency and engage in one student-led civics project before graduation.
In RICLC’s recently published report, The State of Civic Education in RI, teachers reported a lack of time, training, and resources for teaching civics to help them fulfill this new mandate.
The time to address these challenges is now. With dedicated civic funding, we can ensure every district can deliver on the 2021 civic literacy mandate through acquiring high-quality curricular materials, training their teachers and providing necessary experiential civic learning opportunities for their students.
