“sustaining and strengthening constitutional democracy”

Rhode Island Civic Learning Week seeks to highlight the importance of civic education in sustaining and strengthening constitutional democracy in the United States. By highlighting the civic knowledge, skills, and dispositions gained in the classroom that provide the foundation for an informed and engaged populace, Civic Learning Week seeks to further energize the movement to prioritize civic learning for all Rhode Islanders. The week’s events will highlight the voices of youth and teachers.

Our Why

Civic education is needed more than ever to provide each and every person across this country with the necessary tools to engage as members of our self-governing society. We know that the best civic learning happens both in and outside of the classroom, and is a lifelong endeavor touching every facet of society.

In order to underscore the need for prioritization of civic learning across the country, Civic Learning Week brings together students, educators, policymakers, and leaders in the public and private sectors to highlight and further energize the movement for civic education across Rhode Island.

Civic Learning Week builds on the success of more localized efforts that provided civic learning opportunities across three states in 2022. This collaboration by the Massachusetts Civic Learning Coalition (MCLC), New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) and Rhode Island Civic Learning Coalition (RICLC) included events prompting participation by 20,000 students, teachers, and others.
